Pack all your important need to reach items and medication in your hand luggage so they're easily accessed on your flight or tour.
Nothing is worse for stress levels than digging through your main bag annoying your fellow travellers while looking for that 1 teeny tiny chapstick which is always invariably stuck at the very bottom of you bag.
Passport and travel documentation. Also for purchasing duty free shopping for example.
Sunscreen and sunglasses - if you are planning on driving in your destination your eyes will tire much more quickly from road glare without sunglasses. ( Polarised glasses are much better than regular ones )
Camera/smartphone to capture your trip highlights. Mobile phones are handy but a dedicated travel camera will give you much more options. Plus if you lose your phone off a cliff, into the ocean or run out of power- congratulations - now you have no camera, no torch and no ready means of translating or making digital payments etc.
Noise cancelling headphones and blackout blindfolds. To ensure a good night's sleep if you are staying in a busy and noisy city which in tourist areas is probably every hotel. You need your sleep especially if you're driving the next day.
Comfortable/waterproof shoes for possibly some rough/muddy /sandy terrain.
Cash - cards are accepted nearly everywhere but carry cash for smaller purchases to save on transaction fees, vending machines and maybe tipping.
Phone data plans- make sure your mobile phone plan will work at your destination country as many pay as you go plans in the uk will not work on the continent. No phone means no calls, no internet, no digital money payments and very importantly - no SatNav for the car!
Travel adapters and chargers - different countries may have different wall plug designs and voltages so double check before you go.
Roll, not fold your clothes to save space and minimise creasing. (Maybe decide to only pack crease free clothing so no cotton or linen items) Remember to leave extra room for your souvenirs, duty free and other purchases!
Do you really need check in luggage for your flight? I personally haven't put check in luggage on a flight in more than 20 years! Then there is no possibility of lost luggage, no extra airline fees, little chance of having items stolen from your bag and you will have less to carry. Sometimes less is more......
